Chen Wei for #GucciGram Tian
— Alana Massey

Chinese photographer Chen Wei’s work is as much about creating beauty as elevating social consciousness as he stages still lifes and scenes that capture the doldrums and despair, but also occasional joys, of modernity. His images of overgrown plants creeping into homes and leaves sprinkled over a mattress where a disco-ball headed figure lays asleep indicate both a desire to recall nature and an acknowledgment of its eternal presence, no matter how far into the future we believe we have come. In this image, the Tian print itself remains intact as a large frame around a central photo of taxidermy animals hanging from a ceiling in a room where the central focus is on a blindingly white laptop screen. The Tian’s palette of birds and buds can be read as indicators for life, the muted fur tones of the taxidermy as the descent closer to death, and the hollow screen as the ultimate manifestation of a nothingness we do not entirely trust yet cannot draw our eyes away from. — Alana Massey
